Two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, General Gordon Granger stood on the balcony of the Ashton Villa in Galveston, Texas letting everyone know that slavery had been were free June 18, 1865.
It just goes to show you how much we've progressed with the transfer of information in this day and age. The news took two-years to travel down to the south slowing down the crucial life change for many.
