NYC Taxpayers Shelling Out Big Money to House Inmates

It's costing taxpayers a lot of money to house inmates in NYC. According to a study released by the Independent Budget Office (via NY Post), the city spent about $167,000 per inmate last year. When you also take into consideration that NYC had over 12,200 inmates on an average day and you realize that taxpayers are paying a hefty amount.

According to IBO's Doug Teretsky, the cost per inmate number also covers staff salaries, facility maintenance, fringe benefits, and capital expenditures. According to the study 57 percent of NYC inmates were black, 33 percent Hispanic and 7 percent white.
