NYC Newsstands Price Cap Could Double

Your local newsstand may be selling pricier products soon if City Council has its way. According to AM New York, City Council proposed a bill on Monday, which would increase the maximum price allowed for selling products at newsstands from $5 to $10.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said that this maximum price increase will allow newsstands to stay competitive, while being able to sell items like umbrellas, earphones, and cellphone batteries.

There are about 300 newsstands left in the city, but this proposed bill would only affect those newsstands supervised by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs. The bill will be introduced May 22.
